The Atlanta Engagement Session That Accidentally Launched My Comeback
Every creative has that one pivotal moment where the universe gently (or not so gently) reminds them who they actually are. For me, it happened on a ridiculously perfect, golden fall afternoon in Piedmont Park in Atlanta.
It started with a text from an old high school friend living up near D.C. He got engaged, and since he always loved my work, he asked if he and his bride-to-be could fly down to Georgia so I could shoot their engagement photos. As an Atlanta portrait photographer, having someone board a flight for your lens is already super flattering—but when it’s an old friend, the answer is immediately "duh, yes."
Fast forward to session day: late November delivered pure, unearned weather magic. Crisp-but-not-too-crisp air, sweatshirt sunshine, and that soft, buttery light every Georgia wedding photographer prays for. I met his fiancée, and within thirty seconds, we were besties.
There was just one minor detail:
I was five months pregnant.
Now, if you’ve ever tried squatting, lunging, and contorting your body into absurd human origami to get the perfect low-angle shot while holding an entire extra human inside you... it is a sport. But as soon as I raised the camera, adjusted my settings, and started directing them, the physical gymnastics didn't even matter.
It had been a few years since I’d done a full, commissioned portrait session. COVID threw a wrench in the world, life shifted, and I had slowly drifted away from shooting. But the second I got into my groove—which took about four seconds—I didn't just remember how to do it. I thrived.
Standing in the Piedmont Park meadow, watching these two look at each other against the Atlanta skyline, I fell head-over-heels back in love with my medium. And then came the sudden, sharp realization: Wait... whyyyyy did I ever stop doing this?
Turns out, this wasn't just a sweet Atlanta fall engagement session for great friends. It was officially the start of my comeback.
To my incredible clients (and sweet old friend): thank you for flying south, trusting my eye, and accidentally reigniting my whole career. Kaleigh Boyd Creative is officially back, babyyyy.
